Traineeship Trademark & Design Attorney
Trademark & Design Attorney, what’s that?
As a trademark and design attorney, you work for clients who are constantly engaged in innovations, in strengthening their market position and expanding their trademark and design portfolio. You advise clients about registering trademarks and designs, you manage their portfolio and take action against infringements of their trademarks or designs.
What will you be doing?
Protecting trademarks and designs plays an important role in a company's success. NLO Shieldmark attorneys advise clients and act as their sparring partner. You manage the trademark or design throughout its lifespan, from an investigation into availability, registration, and particularly its enforcement. Is a client involved in a dispute? As their first point of contact, you write cease-and-desist letters and manage any negotiations. NLO Shieldmark works for many big multinationals, but also advises small businesses and start-ups about trademarks and designs. The range of clients and advice ensures that your work is varied and concrete.
Combining practice and theory
Our attorneys work together in teams. These teams are compact and consist of senior, medior and junior attorneys. You are immediately thrown into the deep end and work with an experienced attorney. Soon, you will be running your own practice, with your own clients. Of course, you will receive intensive coaching. You will also embark on the external professional education programme to become a fully qualified Benelux Trademark and Design Attorney (BBMM). By working together with the legal colleagues and patent attorneys at NLO, you develop into an all-round attorney and IP advisor.

The traineeship at NLO takes around 4 years, including one year's work experience. You start with an onboarding period of 100 days. During this period, you get to know the company, your colleagues and our clients. In addition, you start work in practice, so that you immediately obtain work experience prior to your traineeship.
NLO Academy
During your traineeship, you also start at the NLO Academy: a varied in-house learning programme. The NLO Academy helps trainees get to know the organisation. Colleagues from different layers of the organisation explain their daily work, so that you quickly become familiar with what they do. Alongside your fellow trainees, you will improve your soft skills relating to project management and train how to present yourself as a professional and communicate with clients in an international workplace. The training sessions are given by experts from the profession: your own colleagues.
The NLO Academy is a great way to get to know the company and its people. It also enables you to get to become better acquainted with your fellow trainees and experienced staff. The NLO Academy is not based in a permanent location, so trainees visit all the NLO offices. Informal drinks are held once a month.
The aim of the NLO Academy is to ensure that trainees feel at home at NLO and are able to share experiences with like-minded trainees.
